Why Events like Pride Matter

Each year, cities across the world come alive with colour, celebration, and community during Pride. While it may appear on the surface to be a joyful parade or festival, Pride is so much more than a party, it’s a deeply meaningful event rooted in visibility, solidarity, and healing.


As a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I often work with individuals from all walks of life, including those within the LGBTQIA+ community. For many, events like Pride can be both empowering and emotional. They are a reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.


Pride is About Visibility and Belonging

For people who have felt isolated, judged, or unseen because of their identity, Pride offers a rare and powerful moment of visibility. It says: you are seen, you are valid, and you belong. In counselling, we know how vital it is to feel accepted for who we truly are. Events like Pride help reinforce this message on a collective scale.


Pride Celebrates Progress and Remembers Struggle

The roots of Pride are in protest, a fight for equal rights, safety, and recognition. While today’s Pride events often look like celebrations, they are grounded in a legacy of resistance and courage. Honouring that history helps us appreciate the progress that’s been made, while recognising the continued challenges many LGBTQIA+ people still face.


Pride Can Be a Healing Experience

For some, Pride is their first experience of community. For others, it's a moment of deep reflection, joy, or even grief. It can bring up a range of emotions, and that’s okay. Being surrounded by others who have shared similar journeys can be deeply affirming. In counselling, we often talk about the importance of safe spaces, and for many, Pride offers just that.


It’s Not Just for the LGBTQIA+ Community

Pride is also a time for allies to show up, listen, and support. It's a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive and compassionate society. Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or not, participating in Pride, respectfully and mindfully, sends a message of solidarity.


The Importance of Ongoing Support

While Pride may last a day or a weekend, the need for acceptance, support, and understanding continues all year round. If you’re struggling with your identity, your mental health, or experiences of discrimination, please know that you don’t have to face it alone. Reach out to those with similar experiences and struggles, or speak to a counsellor with an understanding and empathetic approach to the struggles and challenges you may be facing. There is strength and power in connection.
